As someone who plans on working in politics in the future, there is arguably nothing more important than having good leadership skills. Politics, after all, is an institution that is wholly dependent on leadership. The great leaders in history have all been politicians. As such, it is important for me to not only recognize and understand the traits that contribute to effectively leading and governing, but also the structural hurdles and advantages that allow leadership to either wither or thrive. Today’s politics are more partisan and divided than at any point in recent history, and I am guilty of having taken part in the sharp partisan divide. With that said, there are important lessons to be learned from both parties when it comes to leadership. I am of the belief that President Obama is one of the greatest leaders our country has seen in a long while, partly due to his incredible communication skills. However, I also recognize that the Tea Party wave of 2010 was an incredible feat in today’s political environment. For a movement to gain such immense support it requires great leadership to give the movement direction, whether or not the intent of the movement as a whole is to lead. The lessons that can be learned from examining the current political landscape can provide a unique insight into the different types of leadership that equate into success. When we delve into the leadership tactics employed, we start to see that there are a few traits that all leaders have that are imperative to successfully leading both movements and people. While the differences between the parties can be rather vast at times, the similarities between their leaders . .r contributions matter and their opinions are considered, we will be able to find solutions to problems in places that I personally may not have looked before. Diverse ideas and beliefs promote success, and having a vision for the future requires doing more than maintaining the status quo. While I cannot guarantee this would equate to a successful organization—as there are many uncontrollable factors—I do believe that this would give me the best chance at success. The world has very few great leaders, but in order to try and get to the level to be considered a great leader, one must first examine how great leaders operate. I have no doubt that as I mature and gain work experience, my views on what constitutes a great leader will change. However, I do know that because I am willing to learn and grow, I am on the correct track towards becoming the best leader I can be.
